Family correspondence, Civil War correspondence, and a photocopy of a journal article. Pre-war family correspondence is from Silas Dooley to relatives in Iowa and Ohio. Civil War letters are from Rufus Dooley, family members in service, and family at home. There are letters from Rufus, brothers Atellus and Bart, relatives serving with the 31st and 72nd Indiana regiments, and letters from home from parents Sarah and Silas. Topics include military action, camp life, and the collapse of morale of troops kept in service after the war's end.

The 21st Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized in July 1861 in Indianapolis and saw duty in Baltimore and New Orleans. A native and resident of Parke County, Ind., Dooley served during the Civil War with the 21st Indiana Volunteers, remaining with the unit when it reorganized as the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery Regiment.
